Have you ever wanted to study in a place where elephants, lions, and baboons are your neighbours, and a magnificent canyon offering some of the most beautiful scenery imaginable is in your backyard? Mbombela, South Africa, is where you will find the University of Mpumalanga situated in an area where nature left many exclamation marks in the form of regions that astonish and enchant.
The University is close to The Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s largest game reserves. Its many wild animals include rhinos, buffalos, elephants, lions, leopards, and many more. Many other species of mammals have also found a home here, as have many bird species.
It is also close to the largest “green” canyon on earth, the Blyde River Canyon. Along the tranquil Blyde River’s waters, this canyon is an excellent example of what natural African beauty really is all about. It is, on average, about 750 meters deep.
When you set foot in this part of the world, you have rock below your feet that formed 2 800 million years ago. Many millions of years later, a system of caves formed inside the old rock formation. Today the caves stretch underground for 30 kilometers, but only about 600 meters are accessible for visitors. Nevertheless, the Sudwala Caves attract thousands of tourists every year.
If you want to feel like you can see forever, then take a look through “God’s Window.” It is not far from the university and offers stunning views of the Lowveld-area 900 meters below.
The University of Mpumalanga is a very young university, established in 2014 when it started with 140 students. Since then that number has grown to 1 400. The University has two academic campuses. One in Mbombela and the other in Siyabuswa.
